New Farmhouse County Wicklow
This is a farmhouse for a new generation on an equine farm in an area of outstanding natural beauty in County Wicklow. The design used passive solar principles to achieve a high environmental rating. The building form was designed to fit in with the agricultural buildings of the 200 year-old parent farm. The new house is orientated towards the mountains to the southwest with a glazed facade opening onto a garden terrace. The roof overhangs the terrace sheltering it from rain and preventing the family room from overheating in summer. On the eastern side the roof rises enough to accommodate a study/guestroom at first-floor level with a view over the landscape to the Irish Sea. Low carbon materials were used extensively with Irish-grown douglas fir timber for the structure and Irish-grown larch cladding.
