Gary A. Boyd and John McLaughlin present Making Ireland Modern, a lecture on their exploration of the relationship between architecture, infrastructure and technology in the building of the nascent Irish nation. Their research is divided into ten infrastructural episodes – Negation, Electricity, Health, Transportation, Television, Aviation, Education, Telecommunications, Motorways, Data – spanning a period of one hundred years from 1916-2016. Exploring a range of scales from the detail design of objects to entire landscapes and other territories, Making Ireland Modern will describe architecture’s role in transforming the physical and cultural identity of the new state through its intercession in the everyday lives of its population.
The lecture will be a summation of their research originally presented as Infra Éireann – Making Ireland Modern at the 2014 International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, and currently presented to the public as Making Ireland Modern at the Real Tennis Court, Earlsfort Terrace until the 12th November. The exhibition is constructed as an open matrix of drawings, photographs, models and other artefacts presented under the aforementioned ten infrastructural episodes.
