The island sits in the centre of Cork Harbour where for centuries it has been a defensive fort and convict prison. It was finally decommissioned in 2005 and Cork County Council intends to develop it as a tourist site celebrating its complex history.
Our proposal sought to clarify the distinctive layers of the islands past and to bridge into a sustainable future of ecological tourism based on the rich marine life in the harbour. A marine research station combined with aquarium and centres for sailing and diving all contribute to a vision for the harbour based on a rich and diverse maritime heritage.
